Go With The Flow: How We Should Really Sell To Girls
In reality, as much as our feminine physicality has often been portrayed as a weakness or even disability, there are certain quiet streams of thought that actually frame our periods as a time of liberation.
Thank you Facebook friends for highlighting this phenomenal ad from HelloFlo:
This is not the first piece of creative marketing from companies that deal with that time of the month. A few months ago we reported on this great viral video that amused us no end.
Selling to women has become a limited to a very limited set of stories lines, most of which involve sex or being the object of sex. This even applies to the demographic of pre and just-pubescent girls. It leaves us wondering why only tampon and pad advertisers are given permission to be so creative and original? How does society ‘allow’ theM to depart so dramatically from the standard narrative even to the point of depicting strong, independent and sassy women who are irreverent to a man or, in the case of this latest ad, completely man/sex/sexuality-free?
In reality, as much as our feminine physicality has often been portrayed as a weakness or even disability, there are certain quiet streams of thought that actually frame our periods as a time of liberation. Our lack of availability as a sex object actually creates space for us to define ourselves in ways that don’t reference men in anyway.
In other words, I’m off the market right now so, when I am not working so hard to become pleasing to men, what am I becoming?
The answer seems to be clear – instead of wanting to be sexy, we are sold on being strong, independent, powerful, smart, intelligent and, interestingly enough, endowed with leadership. Not only that, in this great ad, the company have managed sex-ed without the sexualization. How refreshing for young girls to see a healthy sized peer hanging out with other healthy sized peers talking about something important in such a fun, age-appropriate and healthy way.
The one comment I have seen over and over again from fellow Reclaimers, facebook friends and other blogs is…
I wish they were around when I was a kid.
So yey for HelloFlo. Props on a great video and we hope you do really really well!
