Not So Sexy Little Number: Sex Partner Calculator Reveals True Cost To Women

A UK pharmacy, similar to Walgreens, recently released a calculator called the ‘sex degrees of separation’. By entering the number and demographics of the people you have slept with, this cool little tool will calculate how many sexual partners you’ve been exposed to indirectly.

With sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on the rise, particularly on college campuses, perhaps these sobering sexy statistics are actually evidence of a seriously sexist agenda that is happening on our super liberated campuses.

Here is the problem. STI’s do not affect men and women equally, obviously owing to our vastly different biological makeup down below. Women are more susceptible to STIs, less likely to recognize the symptoms or confuse them for something else and therefore, more likely to go untreated. Untreated STIs can damage or destroy our reproductive organs or even KILL US in the case of cervical cancer. Basically, STIs are extremely SEXIST.

The message of sexual liberation is often read as ‘girls should have sex like boys have sex’ – encouraging women to fit a ‘spread your seed’ approach. Our society has encouraged men to celebrate their conquests and move on to the next girl – a stereotype that plenty of men try to reject just as much as the women who are on the receiving end of this kind of treatment.

The major problem is that having sex ‘like boys’ would be a message of equality if women were indeed ‘like boys’, yet we are not. ‘Like boys’ sex puts us in much more danger. Not only that, highly-respected research facilities have consistently shown that the male and female overall sexual experience differs considerably, with women usually needing more emotional factors in order to have as good a time as their male partners.

To be blunt, hook-up culture is sexist, and is exposing women to a greater risk for no greater gain.

If the drive is to make us equal, then why on earth did we pick the stereotyped ‘male’ approach to sex rather than the female approach? Less partners and deeper relationships wouldn’t exactly harm men and, in fact, in the long term, they might find themselves far better off when they finally age out of Tinder.

Last but not least, hook-up culture has also gone a long way in creating an environment — particularly on campus –that allows abusers to do their worst undetected. A new study finally confirmed the statistic that 1 in 5 female students are subject to sexual assault on campus.

Making a difference starts with us. Next time you are on the verge of something with someone new, try instituting what some of my students have now coined as ‘The Four’:

‘The Four’

The four things every girl deserves with a guy

1. Seal the Deal

This is the start of a relationship…

2. Official

This relationship is official and comes with the official titles of ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’

3. Exclusive

It’s just you and me baby.

4. Public

We are facebooked as ‘in a relationship’ and everyone knows it.
